Green Homes Grant Scheme Update
It was recently announced that the UK would launch a scheme to encourage homeowners to make changes for greater energy efficiency.
We’ve recently covered how homes within the UK, especially older ones, typically have issues with energy efficiency and 15% of all GHG emissions within the UK come from homes with properties in this regard. As such, the news of this plan is very welcome.
There’s still plenty that isn’t known about the scheme yet, as it isn’t set to launch until September – the finer details still need to be ironed out, but there is some information for the £2 billion green home upgrades plan that is set to launch.
The first is what will be available with the grant. This could include vouchers reaching values of up to £5,000, with these vouchers then covering green improvements such as insulation for loft, wall and floor. Furthermore, there are some suggestions that double glazing may also be included, but other upgrades such as new boilers won’t be. Additionally, there isn’t any news on whether or not other green upgrades could become available, including solar panels, but this could be a possibility.
As for how these vouchers will work – there’s currently no information on whether there will be an income based restriction or not. The current understanding is that all homeowners and landlords will be considered, but whether your home will quality or not will be the defining factor.
The vouchers are set to cover up to two-thirds of the cost of the improvement, with the aforementioned limit being around £5,000. For example, if the cost of installing insulation were to be £4,000, the homeowner or landlord would only need to cover around £1,300, with the government contributing the remaining £2,700 through the voucher. The remaining 1/3 of costs can be covered by one of the fantastic financing options that we have here at Utility Trade Group.
