📞Switch to Digital!

📞 Fixed landlines, mobiles, and broadband are deep routed into our daily routines. It’s hard to remember a time when they didn’t exist! 📞

The industry is changing, and all businesses across the UK must follow the new changes.

The Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) will close in December 2025. BT will stop selling traditional phone lines in all exchange areas by September 2023.

Every phone line in the UK will have moved to a fully digital network that uses Internet Protocol (IP) across a fibre-based service. It may also mean you need to upgrade your broadband; the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) will also stop working.

Equipment that currently uses the PSTN will stop working:
Alarms
EPOS machines
Door entry systems
CCTV
Faxes

❗ To avoid being disrupted by the above, switch to Digital now. ❗

World Bee Day! 🐝

🐝 In celebration of World Bee Day on Saturday, we’re reflecting on our Erasing Nature project that our team took part in.

What is Erasing Nature?

It’s an art project by local artist Tom Van Herrewege, inspired by his curiosity of the incredible diversity within the animal kingdom and mankind’s interpretation of this across the world. Raising awareness of the developing extinction crisis and communicating what these animals represent to everyone.

The animal’s image is removed through writing, drawing, and scribbling, until the original drawing has become faded away enough to suggest its ecological status.
As you can see, our chosen animal was a Polar Bear, did you know Polar Bears will be extinct in 10 years unless there is a stop to Climate Change?

We wanted to show our staff and customers that we are not just talking about being committed to making change, but that we’re doing what we can to action these changes too.

What are you doing to tackle Climate Change? It might be a small, everyday task like recycling or investing in energy efficient measures like Solar PV and LED lighting.

Share your actions in the comments below to inspire others to join in!

Together, we can make a difference to Climate Change. 🌍

When was the last time you had an energy health check?

There’s no escaping the news of the energy market these days, it is affecting everyone from domestic to corporate customers. Whilst price is a big factor, there are things you can do to make sure you home or business is running as efficiently as possible!

Meter Readings ?
Do you have a smart meter? If not, make sure you’re sending in readings every month to ensure you are only being billed against what you are using. If your bills are being estimated too high, you could be overpaying. Too low, you could end up with a large outstanding balance!

Direct Debit ?
Did you know some suppliers offer a discount if you pay by direct debit? If your supplier offers this and you can, move over to DD. Should you pay fixed or variable? Fixed is great if you have a budget that you need to stick to, it will build up on your account and any variance in your usage means your DD will be amended either up or down when it is reviewed (usually biannually). Variable means you only pay for what you use which is what most customers prefer, however, if you’re due to start a new contract or if you’re out of contract and on a variable tariff, it could lead to a higher bill amount which you weren’t prepared for.

Contract End Date ?
Are you currently in a fixed contract? If so, great! Your prices are fixed for the contract period*. If your contract is ending soon and you have nothing in place, check your suppliers’ current variable rates as these can change every month (at the moment, they are only increasing). Would it be more beneficial to lock in a fixed rate or remain out of contract? With all the uncertainty around the future of energy costs, if you can budget for a fixed contract period, we would recommend this. If prices go down in the future, you can still lock in those rates as early as 12 months in advance (for businesses) to begin when your contract ends so you won’t miss out on the rates whilst they’re available.

Time Management ⏰
If you have a single rate meter, you’re paying the same rate per kilowatt regardless of the time of day. However, if you have a day and night meter, or a day, night, evening & weekend meter, you could look to utilise your cheaper prices. Find out what time your lower rates kick in and see if you could move some of your energy usage to cheaper times.

Invest In Renewables ♻
There are a multitude of solutions available that can help reduce your energy usage, from LED lighting to infrared panels, to solar. If you can invest, there has never been a better time. Give our UT Power Limited team a call if you’re interested in more information about what products would suit you best and to discuss if there are any grants available in your area.

*These could change if there are circumstances out of the suppliers control

Dirty and faulty Solar Panels = Less generation

Why invest in a solution that isn’t working at its full potential? A Monitoring System allows you to remotely see the status of your Solar PV system and how effectively it’s performing.

Benefits of a monitoring system:

  1. Easily check through the app or on your computer how much Solar Power your system is producing.
  2. Clearly see how each inverter and panel perform.
  3. You will receive alerts if an inverter or panel aren’t working at full potential.
  4. The monitoring system quickly updates the data so you will always know how your system is performing in real time.

Generating your own energy is more than just installing the solution, keeping on top of its performance ensures you’re getting the most out of your investment.

It’s already the second week of Spring!

We’re looking forward to the longer, warmer days and I know our Solar PV customers will agree!

The Spring and Summer months are when you get the most out of your Solar PV system. Energy generation takes place whenever there is light so it’s powerful in the winter as well, but the stronger sunshine mixed with longer days will see your generation soar!

This is also a great time to invest in a maintenance package, the cleaner the panels are, the more energy generation is achieved.

Did you know you could lose between 20-25% of generation due to dirty panels?

Take action before the Energy Bill Relief Scheme ends on 31st March

What you need to know

  1. The level of support from the government for businesses’ wholesale costs will be scaled back considerably under the new government EBDS.
  2. The new Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) is a one-year replacement to run from 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.
  3. The discount will apply to customers who have signed a contract on or after December 2021 and for those who are out of contract. To be eligible for the discount, the wholesale price on the day of signing the contract must be above 30.2p/kwh for electricity and 10.7p/kwh for gas.
  4. The maximum discount for electricity will be 1.961p/kwh and for gas 0.697p/kwh. Energy and Trade Intensive industries will receive a higher level of support of 4p/kwh and for gas and 8.91p/kwh for electricity, but that will only apply to 70% of their energy consumption.

Customers should be taking advantage of the current wholesale prices and securing contracts now.

The current wholesale unit rates are considerably less than the price point where businesses will receive the new discount package. Even if they do increase, the discount will not offset those increases.

UT Power celebrates 8th year

We’re extremely proud to announce that our sister company UT Power is celebrating their 8th year installing commercial Solar PV.

They have collaborated with many businesses across the UK to help them take control of their energy, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint.

Over the years we have heard all the myths under the sun!

Top 5 Solar PV myths:

  • Solar PV is too expensive.
  • We can offer finance arrangements that allow you to pay for the cost in smaller monthly payments.
  • Grants and Funding may be available, we’ll help you source these.
  • Investing in Solar PV will help you generate a large amount of your energy yourself; you won’t need to buy as much energy from the grid, so you will be less exposed to volatile market changes.
  • With consistent costs you can predict your energy spend.

Our site isn’t exposed to enough sunlight.
Many organisations believe their sites don’t receive enough sunshine to make Solar PV worthwhile. According to the National Geographic enough sunshine hits the Earth every hour to power the world’s energy needs for a whole year! Even on cloudy days Solar panels still generate clean and efficient electricity. With a carefully designed system Organisations can offset up to 50% of their electricity needs with Solar PV.

We don’t have enough roof space for Solar PV.
Solar PV doesn’t have to be installed on roof space. There are several types of commercial Solar power available:

  • Ground mounted Solar PV
  • Roof mounted Solar PV
  • Solar Car canopies
  • Floating systems

Solar technology is constantly improving – we’re better off waiting.
That is true for all technology not just Solar PV. A well-maintained Solar system can last for over 25 years. We use high-quality equipment from tier 1 manufacturers, so it’s built to last for decades.

Installing Solar PV is a lot of work – it will take time away from our other daily operations.
Our Solar experts offer a customised service from start to finish. We’ll design your system with high quality equipment and inverter options that optimise production. Even after it’s switched on, we can maintain and monitor it throughout its lifetime.

The market is incredibly volatile right now, let us help you navigate your next steps.

There are some big changes happening in the energy industry this year!

Did you know faster switching is coming?

Expected to launch mid-July, non-domestic customers will be able to switch their energy supplies in as little as two working days* for both gas and electricity.

By improving the speed and reliability of switching, the changes aim to increase the number of consumers actively engaging in the market, with the view to drive competition leading to lower bills, better tariffs, products, and services.

There is a “no switch period” between 19th – 21st July* where no supply will be able to move to a new supplier whilst the changes being inputted, your supplier or consultant should have been in touch to explain what options are available if you are affected.

If you’d like more information about faster switching, or your supply is due to move in the no switch period and you have not been contacted, give us a call and we can let you know what your supplier has in place.

*Individual suppliers may have a longer window whilst ensuring all the changes work effectively.

Energy saving tips for the summer and ways to keep your homes cooler!

During the summer months, we tend to spend less time indoors and are therefore less reliant on household appliances which helps to reduce your energy costs, but there is more you can do to keep your usage low. ?

Keep your windows closed during the day
We know, our first impulse when it gets too hot is to open a window. However, opening your window allows more warm air to enter your home. Keep your windows closed during the day when temperatures are high, with blinds and curtains also closed to block direct sunlight. Open them at night when temperatures drop to allow cool air to circulate your home. Remember, fans only circulate the air in your home, so letting in less warm air means you won’t need to use them as much.

Don’t leave appliances on standby
Other than just wasting energy, appliances emit heat when they are not completely switched off. Turning them off or unplugging them can help to keep your home cool during warmer periods.

Dry your clothes outdoors
Washing machines and tumble dryers generate a lot of heat, so cut back on this by only doing full loads and try using a lower temperature on your machine. Using a clothes horse or hanging your washing out on the line is a great alternative to using a dryer.

Try to avoid using your oven
Some ovens can take a long time to get to temperature and to cool down, meaning extra heat in your kitchen for a long period. If you are able, try to do more of your cooking with a microwave or slow cooker to keep your kitchen cooler. Or if you have one, use your barbecue!

And don’t forget to take care of yourself!

? Drink lots of water
☀ Stay out of the sun between 11am – 3pm if possible
?‍? If you have pets, only walk them early morning or late evening
